A GOOD PLACE TO START for moms

When reading this I want to remind you I’m not trying to lead any type of anti-racism work as I am no expert. I’m just here ready to start learning and start making changes, beginning at home.

When this all started I thought, well, since I'm not a racist person that should be enough right? Now I know that no, it’s not. One of my focuses right now is figuring out how to appropriately and pro-actively have discussions about race with my kids as they grow, learn more about white privilege, explore the more subtle ways people can be racist, and figure out some ways I can help get involved in our local community.

Below you will find books and resources that you might find helpful. I’m sharing tools, sharing creators, and sharing resources which were all created by Black authors and educators. This might be uncomfortable work for some of us, but my main goal is not to make this a trend. Not only on Mrs. Nipple but more importantly in how I mother.

WITH YOUR KIDS:

First I want to say do what feels right for you. There are going to be many resources popping up here and there but you know your kids best. A large percentage of children’s shows and books are made up of white children or animals/trucks etc. The same goes for television shows and kid's movies. I had not previously made an effort to proactively incorporate different cultures and races into my children’s daily lives, but I am now. Some changes include incorporating some new books into our library, starting a new show, and proactively having this mindset of inclusion moving forward.

WATCH

Charlie started the show Doc McStuffins last week, which is centered around a black six-year-old girl. He loves it!

Sesame Street is having a “town hall” at 10 a.m. on Saturday addressing racism for kids and families. It’s called Standing up to Racism.

READ

Here are some books we ordered and I added in some extra as well. You can also order a great selection of books at this black female-owned online bookstore HERE. @Hereweeread It’s so well organized offering so many diverse and inclusive book options.

To educate your children around anti-racism: I know many of you have toddlers and babies but it’s never too early to start exposing your children to all different races and cultures. HERE is a great tool you can use in addition to books as a check-in tool until your kids are a bit older. The resource you can download online is called,

A White Families' Guide to Talking About Racism”

Again, it’s very straight forward but can spark some really great conversations. There is no appropriate starting age, it’s more about how you choose to use it as your child’s parent. I think elementary school is when I’ll use it with Charlie at a more in-depth level. It was developed by,  Naomi O’Brian and LaNesha, two female educators. They have 24 years of teaching experience between them. I downloaded the guide and could see how it could be a very useful tool. I chose two slides to speak to Charlie about (he is only three). It was a good check-in tool. As he grows I will use more and more of this resource. Click, HERE, to see some sneak peeks of the resource. This is definitely a tool for families that are ready to really get into racism if you’re not there yet start with just introducing books etc.

A little message from the creators,

“We are parents, too. We understand these conversations might be hard. It is hard for us on the opposite end having conversations about experiencing racism with our kids. We are happy you are committed to doing this work with your young children. We promise it is going to feel more uncomfortable for you than it is for them. You are not harming your kids. You are empowering them. You are teaching them. You are giving them the gift of awareness and the chance to use their white privilege in the best way; to fight racism.”

Birthday parties

This is a hard one. Kids wait the entire year to celebrate their birthday and it’s already hard for them to grasp the current situation we are living in. One follower spoke with a child psychologist about this very issue. Her suggestion was to make it a different celebration than you normally would. Don’t do something you would do under normal circumstances. By doing something wacky you can make it memorable in a fun way instead of being memorable because they didn’t get their party. Maybe that would include a scavenger hunt, a themed family day like an Olympics day, or even a zoom class party.

Here were my initial ideas which I broke down by age

First birthday party: Have a smash cake viewing with your friends! Have your e-guests use zoom to call into the birthday party to view the big moment, the cake smash. This will be just as much fun for kids as it will be for adults! One of my closest friends is doing this for her son’s first birthday on Sunday. Charlie is really looking forward to it.

Toddler: Have all the kids in your child’s class make a short 30-60 second video saying happy birthday and naming one special thing about your child. Then use the app Videon to string the videos together making one long video. It would be a very special birthday surprise!

kids: Contact a local pottery making store and see if they will deliver kits to their friends. You can have a Zoom pottery making birthday activity. There is a place in Wilton called, Happy Hands Pottery, which is offering a to-go service. You can do curbside pick up, paint the pottery at home, and drop back off to be fired. Another idea would be a bakery that could put together cupcake or cookie kits, so everyone can bake something together. For Happy Hands Pottery click, HERE.

Teens: Virtual Netflix movie night! Have a movie night! Have everyone grab a bag of popcorn and watch a new movie together. More, HERE

play dates

One on one is best in my opinion for kids under 6. Have a theme for the call if the kids are young. For example, if it’s dinosaurs, each child would show you their favorite dino books or toys. As the kids get older they can do more interactive playdates, which could include a fun craft or baking session.

keeping in touch with classmates (toddlers)

For toddler aged kids I had the parents in Charlie’s preschool class just send me a short video of the kids saying hi and showing the class what they’ve been up to! I also asked the teachers to send in a short video as well. I am going to compile on the app Videon and make it into a video. I’ll then send it out to the whole class. I thought this would be age-appropriate because Charlie gets bored on FaceTime pretty quickly. (basically same thing above for the toddler party idea)

How we are preparing for the Coronavirus (COVID-19)

The Coronavirus

As moms, it's easy and understandable to worry about what will happen if there is a full-blown local Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak—trying not to get sucked into spending hours on the media coverage and literature on the virus can be difficult. My best advice would be to stick to the facts, not the headlines. Headlines can be extremely misleading. From what we know now and the fact it's mild in children, I'm most worried about my parents contracting the virus and not as much about my immediate family. That being said, we are still learning more every day.

I've always been cautious not to focus too much of my energy on the things I can't control but to focus that energy on things I can. When it comes to the Coronavirus (COVID-19), the only thing I can control is how I prepare my family for protection against a local outbreak.

For our family, preparing for the Coronavirus (COVID-19) means getting our family as healthy and strong as possible, stocking up our home with supplies, and then living our lives with a bit more caution. If there comes a time it is safer to stay inside, then venture out we will be prepared. Other than these things, we are going on with our lives as usual.

The good thing about preparing in these ways is that teaching our kids to be extra diligent about hygiene, strengthening our families' immune systems, and having enough supplies in our home, are all great things to be doing regardless.

Washing the sh*t out of those hands and homes

Hand washing is the single most important thing when trying to protect our children and ourselves from any respiratory illness. Washing your hands with as warm of water as possible and scrubbing with soap for at least 20 seconds should be your goal. Washing hands before each meal, when anyone comes home from being out, after sneezing, coughing, or blowing your nose, before bed, the more, the better! It's tough to teach a baby or toddler not to put their hands in their nose, mouth, or eyes, so this will give them the most protection possible. Again, the biggest thing is cleaning your hands before touching yourself, and though the virus seems to be mild in children (thank God), they can still spread it.

A great way to be proactive in fighting the virus at home includes cleaning frequently touched surfaces and objects daily. This might include handles, light switches, cell phones, cabinet knobs, remote controls, etc. You can use a regular household detergent and water. Though if surfaces are dirty, you want to

1) clean them with water and detergent then

2) disinfect the surface with one of the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) approved products. You can find the list HERE.

Strengthening our immune system

Adding some supplements to you and your children's routine can help strengthen your immune systems.

Here are a few products we use:

Me: I take Binto vitamins to help keep me healthy. I've been using their supplements for a few months and enjoy their program. You take a quiz to see what supplements would be best for you, and they send you your supplements every 30 days. You can find their site HERE. I take their probiotic, CoQ10, Vitamin B12, NAC, and their algae Oil Omega 3 | DHA/EPA. All of their vitamins are organic, vegan, and gluten-free.

The Kids: The boys are taking Garden of Life Raw probiotics for kids, HERE. They take a little in a small glass of water in the morning. This formula supports both digestive health and immune health. For kids 4 and older, you can try Garden of Life Dr. formulated cherry chewable tablets, HERE. I'm also giving them elderberry syrup daily, HERE. It's sweet, so they take it right from the spoon. I just added in the OmegaPals EPA/DHA omega-3 from fish oil HERE, and I'm diffusing the Enfleurage Immune Aid essential oil, HERE. I'm proactively giving the boys the Beekeepers' throat spray for daily immune support, HERE. You can also do something simple, like adding in smoothies to your kid's diet. Our dentists also recommended XLear nasal spray, HERE , while traveling for the kids. XLear has Xylitol, which helps fight microorganisms in the sinuses. This helps them breathe through their nose better, and nasal breathing is better for immunity VS. mouth breathing.

More on elderberry syrup: Black elderberry is a small, antioxidant-rich fruit, and scientists at Sydney University studied its properties. Here were the results: "What our study has shown is that the common elderberry has a potent direct antiviral effect against the flu virus," said Dr. Golnoosh Torabian. "It inhibits the early stages of infection by blocking key viral proteins responsible for both the viral attachment and entry into the host cells." Overall the berries and flowers of elderberry are packed with antioxidants and vitamins that may boost your immune system, so it's an easy way to help strengthen your kid's immune systems.

Stocking up

Babs has always been a big believer in having enough supplies in your home to last you a few months. If you have the room in your home, investing in everyday household items, and food and water that could last around 30 days is a great way to begin to prepare. I'm not going out and investing a small fortune in things we will never eat; I'm just buying more of the food we already love. That way, if we don't need it in the next few months, we can eat and replace this food. I will share what I bought below. Again, this is everything we already eat, just in bulk. We invested in a separate chest freezer when we moved into our home, and it's one of my favorite purchases HERE. We use THIS supplier for all of our meats and THIS supplier for our water.

I ordered enough to last us at least 30 days but the incubation period can be up to 14 days :

Meat

Snacks

Nuts

Pasta

Chickpea Mac + cheese

Popcorn

Dried apples

Peanut butter

Jelly

Avocado oil

Olive oil

Frozen meals

Frozen bread

Frozen fruit + veggies

Toilet paper

Paper towels

Diapers

Wipes

Disinfectant wipes

Bleach

Alcohol-based hand sanitizer (at least 60 percent alcohol)

Aspirin

Ibuprofen

Cough medicine

Children's Tylenol

Shampoo + Conditioner

Body wash

Toothpaste

Deodorant

Water

Doing this not only prepares us so we can stay out of stores during a local outbreak, but it is the responsible thing to do as a member of a smaller community. Most cases of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) do not require hospitalization but do require containment. If your family gets sick and you go to the store to stock up after you are already ill, you are putting your entire community at risk.

Living our lives with a bit more caution

This might include refraining from shaking hands and hugging others, avoiding public bathrooms or using a paper towel to open public bathroom doors, sneezing into a tissue and throwing the tissue out instead of sneezing in our elbow or hands, disinfecting objects you frequently touch daily and staying home when sick are all important. If you are out in a crowd and see someone that is sick, make sure to keep at least six feet away. The CDC also just reported any gathering over 100 people should be canceled.

We are supposed to be heading on a nonrefundable vacation next Friday. Travel would include bringing both boys on a 2-hour flight out of LGA. I called our pediatrician, and he said at this time (3/4/2020), it's ok to fly to locations where there is not an outbreak. He said to be extra diligent about washing hands and, most importantly, strangers touching your kids. I'm very torn around what we should do. Part of me thinks it's not worth it, but then when I look past the headlines, and at the numbers, the other part of me is like hmmmmm. (UPDATED SEE BELOW)

From the mouth of the director of the Center for Global Health Science and Security at Georgetown University, "Don't panic, but prepare. We're not going into a crazy movie situation where the world is on fire, but we may be going into a situation where people are walking around who are sick."

TRAVEL UPDATE (3/10/2020):

Before I tell you our decision, I want you to know we did not make this out of fear. We gathered all the facts and made the best decision we could based on our situation. We decided to postpone our vacation for many reasons, so please read through.

1) Traveling alone with two kids: I was supposed to fly with both boys on Friday. I actually came up with an almost foolproof plan if everything went as planned….which yes, hardly ever happens. If it went as planned, it would have been great, but there were too many moving pieces for me to feel confident that I would be able to get them from NY to down south without touching unsanitized surfaces and putting their hands on their face and in their mouth. This has been weighing on me. I'm usually so laid back about things like this, but with a virus that is brand new VS the flu that's been around for 2,000 years, we just don't know enough about the Coronavirus yet for me to take that risk. I will be sharing a new blog post tomorrow with tips on flying with your littles during the Coronavirus outbreak because I had some great ideas!

2) Visiting Ray's parents: During the later part of our trip, we were going to stay with Rays' parents. His dad is older and the CDC just released a statement that anyone over 60 OR who have chronic illnesses like diabetes to stock up on goods and buckle down for a lengthy stay at home. The CDC expanded its guidelines for people at extreme risk and it includes these two populations. With the virus taking five days to start showing symptoms, we couldn't take that risk. Babs + my father also fall into this category. We would have to change the end of our trip to bypass seeing Ray's parents and stay away from my parents for two weeks upon return, just to be safe.

3) Getting stuck? What if we got stuck? There are so many updates by the hour and though getting stuck on vacation sounds like a dream to me Ray would just not have been able to fully relax with so much going on because he would need to get back for work. I want nothing more than to get out of the northeast as NY just became the state with the most cases in the country and they just sent the National Guard into New Rochell. I just want to gather up my girlfriends and their kids and rent a house somewhere far away (warm of course!)

I'm not recommending everyone cancel their vacations, but I just wanted to give you some insights into our unique situation. We are more likely to catch it here than being away, it was just the transit part I was not 100 percent comfortable with as we were flying out of JFK. The three types of travel I would hands-down cancel would be cruise ship, any park including Disney, and international travel. I get the argument that the flu kills more people but medical professionals understand the flu. I'll put it this way if someone invented a flying car four months ago and only a fraction of people owned one, and there were all of a sudden 500 deaths from flying cars catching on fire and people were saying, "well way more people die each year from traditional auto car crashes ." Does that make sense?….It just doesn't sit well with me when people compare it to the flu.

I kept the boys out of school this week because God forbid they catch the stomach flu right before we fly!! I'm not sure what the right move is now. I'm shocked they have not just closed schools and put religious gatherings on hold for two weeks (as religious gatherings seem to be spreading the Coronavirus rapidly) It seems pretty clear to me what needs to happen. Still, we seem to be getting so many mixed signals.

I took a survey about traveling, and I had hundreds of messages from moms, doctors, pediatricians, even some feedback from someone that has a friend at homeland security and a pilot. The majority of you said, GO! As it doesn't really affect kids and just to sanitize the plane. That was the most common response, even from many peds. Some doctors said don't go…. and someone that is friends with a person at homeland security said they should not travel domestically or internationally, and someone that is on calls daily for their job with the CDC said to cancel your trip…it's bad.

We ended up changing our vacation to May as this was economically the best move. So now we just need to get through the next nine weeks. I hope we know much more by then and if we can't fly, I'm getting in the car and driving!!

I'm just a tired mom that could use a vacation right now, and these are just my thoughts. Based on the numbers and data, I know the many of you will get on a plane and enjoy an incredible vacation. If you do go away, please promise me you will disconnect, relax, and enjoy a margarita in my honor.

xx

Mrs. Nipple

Do not take this advice without checking with your doctor first. I gathered the majority of this information from the CDC website, and added what we are doing as a family in our own home

LOCAL ORGANIZER

TOP TEAM CT

I never really thought about hiring an organizer. I’m not a super organized person but when I became a mom I really tried to get a good system going, but every time clutter seemed to start rolling in. No matter how hard I seemed to try a new season, a birthday, a friendly get-together and everything seemed to be everywhere. Ana reached out to me on Instagram a few times and I have to be honest I was very hesitant to even consider meeting with her. The though of having someone come into my house and handle all of our belongings made me feel a little uncomfortable. After some persistence on her part I thought why not, lets give it a try.

I can’t tell you how warm and loving Ana is! She is so great with kids and feels like family. After our first meeting I was immediately put at ease and gave her my full trust to do whatever she saw fit to help us become organized.

We decided to start with the kitchen, play room and basement.

The kitchen was so important to me because it’s our most used space in the home, our playroom needs to be organized because it doubles as our mudroom and is a walk through room which also holds the powder room, and our basement gave me the most amount of anxiety in out home.

Our kitchen was made up of tons of very large pull our drawers and it was almost impossible to keep multiple things in each drawer which we needed to do. Ana created smaller spaces within each drawer and created systems for us. It has been life changing.

These wood dividers Ana used throughout the kitchen look custom, you can find the two sizes we used linked below.

Our playroom functions so well as multiple spaces now. It was previously mostly used for storage because it’s where we just threw everything and that was completely changed. We have storage for the shoes, jackets, hats and kids gear. We have a brand new toy storage closet and reading section for the kids! It’s been transformed.

The boys LOVE having the books organized right on the door and so do I. You can find the book organizer HERE.

Our basement was our biggest transformation. When we moved into our home we had a two/three month old. That being said we literally packed everything up at our apartment. and threw it in our new basement. We never really unpacked all of our clothes and junk. I never was able to sort through and organize at the time because I was a new mom. As I needed things I would run down and try and find it like a needle in a hay stack. I would unpack multiple boxes making our issue worse. I got to a place where I never wanted to go into the basement. Ana took this disaster and completely transformed it. This was my favorite part of our project. My husband was blown away when he saw what she did. I gave her full authority to do what she needed and she took care of everything.

SAG HARBOR FOR 24 HOURS

AHHHHH SAG HARBOR ONE OF MY FAVORITE ESCAPES

HERE ARE SOME OF MY GO-TOS FOR 24 HOURS IN SAG HARBOR

SLEEP

I love everything about Baron’s Cove. The location, the amenities, and the scene. We stayed at their Sag Harbor boutique hotel for a couples getaway. Baron’s Cove is located a stone’s throw from downtown Sag Harbor and has multiple amenities. Not only is the decor EVERYTHING, I want my home to look like their lobby, but the amenities are what I love best. They have a beautiful pool surrounded by hedges, ping pong, and other fun activities around the pool. They offer yoga and other fun programming and my favorite ….. the bikes. You can take them out for a spin to explore the town. We were on them all day! It’s the best way to see Sag harbor. The hotel is also kid-friendly!

eat

Breakfast: Something light and quick because you want to explore and let’s face it you are most likely going to eat your way through the day. Pop into Provisions located right down the street for a breakfast burrito.

Lunch: Let’s put those bikes to good use! Bike up to Harbor Market & Kitchen. Enjoy the beautiful homes along the way. This is my favorite place for lunch! Everything is delicious. It’s super laid back and perfect for some mid-day fuel to hold you over for dinner.

Snack: Vacation snacks are imperative. Pop into Sylvester & Co. for the best chocolate chip cookies in the Hamptons. SERIOUSLY move over Tates.

Dinner: Sushi it is! I love Sen Japanese restaurant. I’ve been going there for years and it’s my second favorite sushi spot after, Suki Zuki in Watermill.

enjoy

Sag Harbor for me is all about strolling and relaxing without a plan. Enjoy the shops, the food, and the experience. You don’t need a 9-5 agenda. Just enjoy what Sag Harbor has to offer by walking or biking the streets :) Biking through the various neighborhoods and “house hunting” being top on my list.

How to throw a party locally

party time

Planning a party for both kids and adults can be extremely stressful if you don’t know the go-to venders. Compiling a solid list of companies that go above and beyond on for a party helps my stress levels. I’m sharing a few of my favorite below!

Florals: STEMS + CO. : My go-to for everything florals or holiday decor are the ladies behind Stems + Co. They have delivered time and time again for us, and they usually handle the florals for most events I attend. Think modern florals with a Brooklyn touch. I trust these girls so much. I often tell them the event I’m throwing or vibe I’m going for, and they blow me away every time.

Cake + Cookies + Cupcakes: CRAZY CONFECTIONS: It’s tough to find a beyond talented baker + artists all in one at such reasonable prices until I met Adrena from Crazy Convections. She does all my hostess gifts (more on that later) and birthday cakes, cookies, and cupcakes. She impresses me every time. She did Charlie’s first and second birthday cakes and cookies. She also has done event branding cookies for Mrs. Nipple and makes me hostess gift cookies which is such a fun conversation starter. A fun cake and cookie brings the theme of a party together, in my opinion. I can’t recommend Crazy Confections enough. You can find their website, HERE. @CRAZYCONFECTIONS

Dessert: DEBORAH ANN’S SWEET SHOPPE, homemade Chocolates, and Ice cream: If you need a party-friendly dessert this is your place. I find at parties; the more conversational the dessert is, the better. You don’t just want people talking about your dessert, but you want them to be able to speak to one another while eating your dessert. People love grazing at parties, and there’s nothing like a chocolate spread, (think cheese board without the cheese) to get me excited about dessert at parties. Deborah Ann’s is the most adorable shop in Ridgefield, Connecticut. No one does chocolate like Deborah Ann’s so it’s worth the trip! Check them out on the web, HERE. @DASWEETSHOPPE

The food: TOASTS: Appetizers and meal planning can be daunting. You want everything to be presentable but also have a little something for everyone, all while it tasting great. That’s where Toasts CT shines. TOASTs prepares and delivers carefully curated, whole-food, gourmet, catered boxes and grazing tables for special occasions. All of their boxes are picture-perfect. I’m also incredibly drawn to their grazing tables which are both a culinary and design masterpiece. Reach out to them for your next event, HERE. @TOASTSCT

kids party meals: RIKO'S PIZZA: I like to keep it simple when it comes to food at kid's parties. We love RiKo's pizza for our parties. For a few reasons. One, it's delicious, and two they slices are the perfect size for kids. Order ahead and they even deliver to most areas, especially for catering orders. I could not recommend them enough. The salad pizza is my personal favorite. You can find their site, HERE. @RIKOSPIZZA1

Hostess gifts: CRAZY CONFECTIONS: Something fun for a very special hostess gift could be entertaining/fun themed cookies! I have done this for parties, and it always happens to be a fun conversation starter for everyone! When Stranger things just became popular, I brought Barbara cupcakes to a party. When my friend had a brand party, I brought her logo on cookies. Then when my friend turned 35 I brought a few fun emoji cookies with THIS IS 35 spelled out in cookies and her handle. There’s nothing you can’t do with cookies and even a half a dozen order can be a really fun hostess gift. @CRAZYCONFECTIONS

THE BIG NEWS

THE BIG NEWS

A year after a very lonely winter with a newborn, I decided to take a chance. I started the Mrs. Nipple blog and community because I felt like there wasn’t a space to connect with new moms during pregnancy and that first year home with a newborn. I also remembered having a million questions when I was pregnant. While registering, I so wanted to connect with real moms and not just websites filled with information. I was also blown away by the amount of women running small baby companies and so passionate about innovative baby products. I launched Mrs. Nipple November of 2017.

It’s been an incredible few years! I’ve loved every minute of this journey and will still be continuing to focus on Mrs.Nipple, even with this new venture.

Over the last few years as I started learning more and more about blogging, I became extremely passionate about the business aspect of blogging and the influencer space. I also started doing a great amount of networking with brands. One common theme I heard from small, medium, and large sized companies was the obstacles they faced when trying to find influencers that both align with their brands and deliver results.

This didn’t surprise me. After over a year of market research, it was very clear that from a brand perspective it’s very hard to weed out the influencers from the people who want to be influencers but just inflate their follower count, likes and comments with unethical strategies. From a brand perspective, follow count, likes, and comments are how many brands decide if they want to work with an influencer. However there are more important metrics on which brands should be focused. At Mrs. Nipple + Co we’ve developed a vetting system which analyzes multiple data points so brands can be confident in their partnerships in the influencer space.

At Mrs. Nipple + Co. we also developed the highest level of respect for so many bloggers that are busting their backsides every single day with hundreds or even thousands of real likes, comments and followers but are having to compete with knock off influencers who hurt this entire market. I wanted to work with brands to help them develop an influencer strategy they can feel good about and help connect them with authentic influencers who are moms.

What I soon realized was millennial moms are all influencers in their own right. We naturally love talking about everything mom and what’s working and what’s not. That’s why I’m launching the first social media agency, Mrs. Nipple + Co. that is open to bloggers, mom coaches (anyone that guides a mom or mom to be in any way), and the everyday mom (moms that love telling their mom friends and family about everything baby). I wanted this entire community to have a space at Mrs. Nipple + Co. and be able to connect all of you with mom brands, either with paid partnerships or to sampling programs with access to free product. There really is something for everyone! So, if you are a blogger, a mom coach, or an everyday mom head to, www.mrsnippleandco.com to sign up to become part of the Mrs. Nipple + Co. influencer agency and sign up for potential brand collaborations.

For brands, please visit www.mrsnippleandco.com to learn more about Mrs. Nipple + Co. I would love to connect. Not only am I developing an incredible roster of moms to work with but if you want to keep your influencer efforts in-house I also offer a one day course called, “The Goodies". Where I both develop an influencer strategy for your brand and teach you the ins and outs of navigating the influencer space.

MOM MEALS & SELF CARE

STAYING HEALTHY

Self care is so important and something I try and fit in especially as a new mom, but it seemed to never happen during those first six months postpartum. It’s also something that is extremely hard to make time for. As moms I’m sure many of you can relate to taking care of everyone else but yourself.

I’ve been having trouble shedding my baby weight from being pregnant with Ford (now 11 months) . That mixed with exhaustion leading to unhealthy eating choices left me low on energy and feeling pretty bummed out. By the time I feed the kids and get them to bed the last thing I want to think about is cooking for both myself and Ray. I decided to take a month and try out different food delivery services in the area. I wanted the plans I chose to be centered around using fresh and healthy/anti-inflammatory ingredients, being easy to follow, breastfeeding friendly, and delicious. I chose three local brands and one national brand.

If you are local take advantage of these great options. So many moms reached out to me expressing how lucky I was that I had such great services at my finger tips. For moms that are not local, Sakara Life is a wonderful nationwide delivery food service option.

MAIKANA FOOD

Maikana foods is my go-to for everyday clean eating done right.

MANTRA: “Today's world is filled with diets and fads and an insane amount of information of what and how you should eat. Maikana believes in a simpler world. We use whole real foods. We use fresh ingredients. We believe in all things in moderation (except love and laughter). We believe eating a wholesome meal should not be a stressful ordeal. We want to make the healthy world one that is easy and convenient to navigate. We want to make eating healthy as straightforward & convenient as possible. Simply satisfying, healthy and delicious meals- made with love- and delivered right to your door. It can't get easier than that.” -Maikana

Things I loved:

SCHEDULE: The meals are made and delivered on the same day.

MENU: The menu changes every week so you won’t get tired of the same choices & everything is as fresh as you can get as it’s prepared and delivered on the same day. You can also order one-off meals, you don’t have to do an entire program to still benefit from eating healthy.

DELIVERY: Convenient delivery to your home or work every day.

SUPPORT: During the New Year Reset that I was a part of I had access to a nutrition and health expert, Katie Diehl and I was also part of a facebook support group for the week. This was so helpful, especially when going from unhealthy eating to trying to make good choices. I also loved how Maikana Food incorporated other great brands in their delivery, including Nit Noi. I loved the Nit Noi Provisions bone broth. I also really enjoyed using the adaptogenic powder they included in the reset. I highly recommend jumping on the next reset to kick off changes in your eating.

EASY TO FOLLOW: Everything was so clearly outlined and incredibly well organized. My first shipment arrived with a packet that went over every aspect of the program and answered every single question I had. It was extremely informative and really set me up for success.

MINI MAIKANA: It’s not always easy eating clean but having the option to order nourishing foods for you kids as well really helps set you up for success.

KINNEY LANE

Kinney Lane is my go-to for meals the entire family can enjoy while you still feel like you are making great healthy choices.

MANTRA: “Our food philosophy is pretty simple. We think healthy food should taste good and be easily attainable. We know that the food that is best for us isn’t usually fast or easy and we don’t always have the time to prepare the nutritious meals we need to fuel our busy lives.

At Kinney Lane, we realize there is a need for readily available and prepared wholesome foods. When life gets busy, making healthy choices isn’t always easy. Kinney Lane’s goal is to help busy families and professionals eat well by providing them with healthy choices that are already prepared - giving you more time for work and family.” -Kinney Lane

Things I loved:

SCHEDULE: The meals are delivered twice a week.

MENU: I love that there is a super simple ordering system online but I also love that they can pick for you. I really didn’t have the time to go back and forth around what I was going to order so I simply told them I wanted it to be whole 30 compliant and I was delivered such a delicious weeks worth of food that was also family friendly! I told them I was breastfeeding and they included a special overnight oat container just incase my supply dipped from the whole30 meals. I loved that! Their menu also changes every week which is nice.

DELIVERY: Convenient delivery or pick up.

FAMILY MEALS: It’s really hard to stay healthy when I’m responsible for feeding my family as well! Having meals, especially dinners that were big enough for the whole family was a game changer.

EASY TO FOLLOW: Very simple and easy to follow!

Owner,Rachael, shares some thoughts:

“All meals are ready to heat and eat. We serve our entrees in oven-friendly containers equipped with heating instructions. This allows for easy heating and clean-up.

We believe in using organic, simple and natural ingredients: no refined sugar, gluten, or artificial ingredients. Many of our options are also dairy-free. Meals are designed to taste good but also fuel our clients busy lives with nutrient dense meal options.

As a local mom (I live in OG) I felt there was a need for a healthy, prepared foods service that could help busy moms and professionals get meals on the table and feel good about the food their families were eating. I am a classically trained chef, who has a passion for health and wellness. Being a mom I understand the flexibility that moms need which is why I provide several sizing options for different family sizes.” -Rachael

GREEN & TONIC

Green & Tonic is my go-to for the most cleanse like plan

MANTRA: At Green & Tonic, we want to help you make informed choices that positively affect your health, everyday.

G&T is delicious. We believe that healthy food should be fresh, vibrant, and full of interesting flavor and textures. “Good enough for health food…” said no one ever at G&T.

G&T is easy. On the run or taking it slow, we offer easy solutions for a healthy fuel-up on the go or an afternoon catch-up session with a friend. We feed your healthy lifestyle.

G&T is good for you. We put plants at the center of your plate and serve non-GMO, locally and sustainably-grown ingredients. We count quality, not calories. We embrace healthy fats, sweeten mindfully, and celebrate food in its least-processed form.

G&T is the real deal. We pride ourselves on being authentic, honest and transparent—with our employees, our customers, and everyone with whom we get to do business.

G&T makes sense. We feed your healthy appetite for information, inspiration and motivation so you can make better-for-you choices

Things I loved:

SCHEDULE: Depending on what food delivery service you choose you will be picking up your meal one or two times during the week.

MENU: The three food cleanses that are offered are the 1 day reset, the 3 or 5 day seasonal cleanse, or the G&T til’ dinner (You go off the cleanse at night to eat with your family). You can choose a cleanse that is juice based or choose one that incorporates clean eating.

PICK UP: No delivery offered but G&T has locations all over CT.

CLEANSE: What makes this different than the other services is this is much more cleanse focused in my opinion. You are incorporating multiple juices per day on top of the clean meals. Sometimes I feel like my body just needs a break and that’s where this cleanse comes in.

EASY TO FOLLOW: Very easy! There was a print out that went over each day and what I should be eating.

You can find Green and Tonic’s website, HERE.

SAKARA

Sakara is my go-to for out of towners

MANTRA: “THE SAKARA SECRET. Our philosophy is a combination of cutting-edge nutrition science and ancient healing wisdom. We source the highest-quality organic ingredients and powerful superfoods from trusted farmers and suppliers. Our meal delivery program brings everything to your door, fresh and completely ready to enjoy.”

Things I loved:

SCHEDULE: This was delivered to our front door two times during the week at 5 a.m.

MENU: Sakara offers a signature program (what I did), a deep cleanse, and a program specifically designed for brides.

THOUGHTS: Honestly I was impressed with this service. I didn’t think I would like it because it was not local and I was worried about freshness and taste etc. Everything was delicious and tasted fresh. I would highly recommend as a wonderful option if you don’t live in Connecticut and you can not take advantage of the local services. You can use my code for a discount, REF_NIPPLE15

EASY TO FOLLOW: Everything came in a box and was very easy to follow.

BIG + EXCITING NEWS

I had trouble figuring out how to start this post as not many of you really know much about me outside of being a mom and my mom life. I grew up with dyslexia and ADD. Growing up with two learning disabilities was pretty tough, but at the same time it’s all I ever knew. However, it’s made me who I am today for which I am very grateful. When I grew up, the school system was unfortunately not set up for children like myself, or at least that’s how I felt. I was very self conscious about my ability to concentrate, process information, and spell. I discovered a wealth of confidence and an incredible boost in my self esteem as I excelled in my passion, soccer.

When it came time to deciding on a career, I thought long and hard about my strengths and focused on choosing one in which I would find personal fulfillment. I loved connecting with people, was very competitive, and had a passion for innovation. I landed my first job at Eli Lilly and two years later at Johnson and Johnson. I worked in outside medical sales in Manhattan and loved every minute of it. I flew up the corporate ladder, receiving the highest title in executive sales before the age of 30. I was the youngest person in my company to attend the Johnson and Johnson Management Development University.

I share this with you for two reasons: first, for all the moms struggling with children with learning disabilities, please realize there is a light at the end of the tunnel and amazing things await these unique children as they grow and find their niche in life. Secondly, it’s never too late to change your path. I am a highly creative person, and my career was the furthest thing from it. I felt like I was walking around with an emptiness, like there was something more I was supposed to do in the creative world. If I didn’t take a risk and try something different, I would always wonder what if…
